Frequently Asked Questions
- What is this?
- For whatever reason, certain names are more attractive than others. For example, if you tell me you met a girl named Alexis, I automatically think to myself, "She sounds hot," even though I know nothing about her, except her name. Recognizing this, my friends and I attempted to create an authoritative 'hot list' of names, but quickly discovered that we didn't always agree. This site seeks to find out which names are statistically the hottest by counting votes cast by surfers like yourself.
- How do I vote for my name?
- Names are chosen randomly for voting - you cannot vote for your name unless it happens to be offered to you. I do this to prevent somebody from voting for his own name 400 times, and thus ruining the data. You can look up your name, however, and see what other people have voted for it. If you're really determined to vote for yourself, just keep voting! You'll run into your own name eventually.
- Why can't I look up my name?
- The list of names is taken from the Social Security Administration, which only includes the top 1000 baby names from any year. As such, uncommon names may fail to appear in the database.
- The Lookup Page says my name is 82% hot. What does that mean?
- The percentage given is your percentile ranking for hotness. A score of 82% means that right now, your name is hotter than 82% of the all of the names on this site. Your perentage can change as more votes are counted in the system.
- When I try to rate men, I only get one vote and it switches back to women!
- You have probably blocked the cookie from this site that keeps track of which gender you're voting for. This is the only data contained in the cookie, so you can safely allow cookies from this domain, which will fix your problem.
- What is "meh?"
- "Meh" is an expression of indifference. Vote "meh" if your feelings about the given name are not particularly strong.
